Unavailable combinations
Why swatches are crossed out, how out of stock and missing variations are told apart, and products with many variations.
As customers choose, Swatchline crosses out the swatches that can't be bought with the choices already made. They're dimmed, struck through, and can't be chosen.
Two reasons
- Out of stock: the variation exists but is out of stock. For example, the shirt in Navy, size XL.
- Not available with your other choices: there's no such variation. For example, the shirt doesn't come in Terracotta XS.
Hovering a crossed-out swatch shows which one it is, and screen readers read it out. Variations on backorder count as available.
How choices narrow each other
Every attribute narrows the others. Choose Navy and the sizes Navy doesn't come in are crossed out; choose XL first and the colours without an XL are crossed out. A variation set to Any for an attribute (for example "Sand, any size") fits every value of that attribute.
To get to a crossed-out value, clear the choice that rules it out first: click the chosen swatch again, or Clear.
Products with many variations
WooCommerce puts a product's variations in the page only up to 30 of them. Above that it looks the variation up once everything is chosen, and its dropdowns can't show what's unavailable. Swatchline always adds a short list of which combinations exist and are in stock, read in a couple of quick database queries, so crossing out works the same for a product with 300 variations.
Note
If you'd rather skip that list for a very large product, a developer can turn it off with the swatchline_load_variations filter. See Filters and hooks.
Out of stock variations hidden by WooCommerce
With Hide out of stock items from the catalog on (WooCommerce → Settings → Products → Inventory), WooCommerce leaves out-of-stock variations off the product page altogether. Swatchline follows: their values show as not available.
Note
Swatchline Pro can blur or hide sold-out swatches instead of crossing them out, and leaves out values that have nothing in stock when WooCommerce hides out-of-stock items.
