# Volume and longest side - Rateline 1.x documentation

> Price by how much space an order takes, or by the longest item, from your products' dimensions.

> [!NOTE]
> This is part of **Rateline Pro**.

Rateline Pro adds two conditions to each rule's **When** list, both from the length, width and height on each product's **Shipping** tab, in your store's dimension unit (**WooCommerce → Settings → Products → General**).

## Volume

The space the order takes: each product's length × width × height, times its quantity, added up. In cubic centimetres (cm³) or cubic inches (in³), depending on your unit.

| When | From | To | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume (in³) | | 1000 | 6.95 |
| Volume (in³) | 1000 | 5000 | 12.95 |
| Volume (in³) | 5000 | | 29.95 |

Useful when your carrier prices by box size rather than weight, or for light but bulky goods such as lampshades and pillows.

## Longest side of an item

The longest side of any one item in the order, whatever its quantity. Carriers often charge more, or refuse, above a length:

| When | From | Cost | Label | No shipping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Longest side of an item (in) | 96 | | | ✓ |
| Longest side of an item (in) | 48 | 24.95 | Oversize parcel | |
| Weight | | 6.95 | | |

Anything over 48 inches ships as an oversize parcel; over 96 inches, this method isn't offered.

## Products without dimensions

A product without dimensions measures 0, so it adds nothing to the volume and is never the longest item. Fill in dimensions on the products these rules are for.

## With per shipping class and per item

Per shipping class, the volume and longest side are worked out for each class's items; per item, for each cart line. See **Per shipping class and per item**.

> [!NOTE]
> Without Rateline Pro, Rateline can't measure volume or length: rules with these conditions show "Not available" and are skipped, and the next rule that matches applies.
