# Per shipping class and per item - Rateline 1.x documentation

> Price each shipping class, or each product in the cart, with its own rule, and add the costs up.

> [!NOTE]
> This is part of **Rateline Pro**.

Rateline prices the whole order with one rule. Rateline Pro adds a **Calculate** setting to each Table rate method, under the tax status:

- **Per order** (the default, Rateline's own): the first rule that matches the whole order sets the rate.
- **Per shipping class**: each shipping class in the cart is priced with its own rule, and the costs are added up.
- **Per item**: each product in the cart is priced with its own rule, and the costs are added up.

## Per shipping class

The cart is split into groups: one per shipping class, plus one for the items without a class. Each group goes down the table on its own and uses the first rule that matches it:

- a rule for a class matches that class's group;
- a rule for **No shipping class** matches the items without one;
- a rule for **Any** matches any group.

The group's weight, number of items, subtotal, volume and longest side are its own items', not the whole order's.

| When | To | Shipping class | Cost | Per lb | Label |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Always | | Bulky | 49 | | Freight delivery |
| Weight | 5 | No shipping class | 6.95 | | |
| Weight | | No shipping class | 9.95 | 0.50 | |

A bench (Bulky) and a 4 lb kettle: $49 for the bench plus $6.95 for the kettle, $55.90 in one rate.

## Per item

Each cart line (a product with its quantity) goes down the table on its own. Two of a 2 lb mug count as one line of 4 lbs and 2 items:

| When | From | To | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | | 2 | 3 |
| Weight | 2 | 10 | 8 |

A 1 lb candle and two 2 lb mugs: $3 + $8 = $11.

## When a group has no rule

If any group (or item) has no rule that matches, or its rule is **No shipping**, the whole rate isn't offered. That way nothing ships at a price you didn't set. To be sure every group is priced, end the table with an **Always** rule for **Any** class.

## Labels

When every group's rule has the same **Label**, the rate shows it; otherwise the rate shows the method's name (or the rate's name, see **Several rates from one table**).

## The method's settings

The handling fee, minimum and maximum cost and free shipping coupons apply once, to the added-up cost, not to each group.

> [!NOTE]
> Without Rateline Pro, Rateline prices per order whatever this setting says: one rule for the whole order.
