# Handling fee, minimum and maximum - Rateline 1.x documentation

> The settings above the rules that apply to every rate the table gives: handling, minimum and maximum cost, free shipping coupons and tax.

The settings above the rules apply to whatever cost the matching rule gives.

## Name

What customers see at checkout, unless the rule has its own **Label**.

## Tax status

**Taxable** or **None**, like WooCommerce's own methods.

## Free shipping coupons

When ticked, a coupon with **Allow free shipping** (on the coupon's **General** tab) makes this rate free. Off by default, so existing coupons don't change your shipping until you choose.

## Handling fee

Added to the rule's cost, for example to cover packing. It isn't added to free shipping: a rule that costs 0 stays free.

## Minimum cost

A rate is never less than this. Like the handling fee, it doesn't apply to free shipping.

## Maximum cost

A rate is never more than this, for example to cap per-item pricing on big orders. It applies after the handling fee.

## In what order

1. The matching rule's cost.
2. If it's above 0: plus the handling fee, then raised to the minimum.
3. Capped at the maximum.
4. 0 with a free shipping coupon, when that setting is on.

For example, a rule of $2 + $3 per item, a handling fee of $1.50, minimum $6 and maximum $12:

| Items | Rule | + handling | Minimum, maximum | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $5 | $6.50 | | $6.50 |
| 5 | $17 | $18.50 | capped at $12 | $12.00 |
| Free rule | $0 | stays $0 | | Free |
